Nørrebro
On the other side of the Lakes from Nansensgade, Nørrebrogade is the main thoroughfare of Copenhagen's most culturally diverse neighborhood, which extends north-westwards as far as Nørrebro Station; though there is really little of interest to tourists past the 'runddel', the intersection between Nørrebrogade and Jagtvej.The largest of the three boroughs outside the city gates (the others being Østerbro and Vesterbro), Nørrebro is a lively district with much to offer – whether you're out to snap a vintage bargain or sip lattes in one of the area's many cafes. It's also the final resting place of Hans Christian Andersen, philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and jazz trumpeter Ben Webster, and no visit to the neighborhood is complete without a walk through Copenhagen's most famous graveyard, Assistens Kirkegård, where you can spend a pleasant hour locating the luminaries' graves.
At the very foot of Nørrebro, Ravnsborggade is known for its many antique shops, where a bargain is far more likely than in city center stores. Parallel streets like Elmegade and Blågårdsgade, meanwhile, offer a number of vintage clothing stores along with a multitude of alternative-styled cafes and a bewildering diversity of ethnic restaurants. With a raw history of social resistance and the occasional riot or two, visitors should note that outer Nørrebro has seen an escalation in gang-related violence since 2008.
