Nansensgade Quarter
It seems hard to believe that when Christian IV first ordered the construction of his palace
Rosenborg Slot in 1606, he saw it as his summer residence outside of the city gates. And though Copenhagen may have crept well up around it, the stately 17th century manor house and its extensive
Kings Gardens (Kongens Have) offer those tired of the city's bustle plenty of green space. Unsurprisingly, Kongens Have is the city's most popular park.
The gardens have plenty of nearby competition in the area, however, including
H.C. Ørstedsparken and the serene gardens of the
Botanisk Have, as well as
Østre Anlæg, where the country's national gallery, or
Statens Museum for Kunst, is located.
Those looking for an alternative to the Indre By might enjoy Nansensgade and adjacent streets, a compact district with a boho-vibe. Tucked away between the busy Nørreport Station and the Lakes, the Nansensgade quarter has an atmosphere entirely its own. A favorite spot for students, alternative types and the younger crowd, it offers a number of highly original bars, global eateries, low-key clubs and vintage clothes shops, and is great for just walking around and soaking in the scene.
