Outside Copenhagen Attractions in Copenhagen
If you feel like a change of scenery from the downtown area, there are plenty of attractions found just outside Copenhagen perfectly suited to a day trip and only 30-45 minutes away by local train. They offer not just natural beauty and the chance to get away from the noise of the city but also culture and activities with or without the family.
The internationally-renowned Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is both an art museum with an architecturally-impressive building and a day out in its own right, located as it is on the edge of the Øresund coast with fabulous sea views and a wild and extensive sculpture garden. Out of Africa fans should note the nearby Karen Blixen Museet at Rungsted Kyst.
Castles abound in north Zealand, the most famous of them being Kronborg Slot near Helsingør (Elsinore), the venue of course of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Not quite so famous but much more palatial, Frederiksborg Slot is worth visiting for its grounds alone.
Families should arm the kids with backpacks and take the S-Train up to Hellerup to check out science museum Experimentarium, where guests are urged to fiddle and touch all the exhibits, or a little further north to Charlottenlund, to visit Danmarks Akvarium. Other family-friendly attractions just outside Copenhagen include the grand old funfair Bakken near Klampenborg, the open-air wing of Nationalmuseet Frilandsmuseet and Iron Age natural paradise Land of Legends Lejre.
