Copenhagen's Indre Byen (the Inner City) neighborhood is the city's oldest quarter and offers many things to do not only in the form of museums and historic landmarks but also in terms of shopping and art galleries. Bustling with life and character around its winding, cobbled streets, the Indre Byen has activities for families, couples and backpackers.
Top of our list is
Rosenborg Slot, a beautiful Renaissance palace on the edge of the old city surrounded by one of Copenhagen's best parks,
Kongens Have (The Kings Gardens). Most visitors come to catch a glimpse of Denmark's crown jewels, but the mansion has plenty more to see. Built in the 1600s, Rosenborg was ordered by 'builder king' Christian IV as his summer residence - combine it with another architectural masterpiece of the period, the renaissance observatory
Round Tower, number two on our list.
Those interested in history will also find much to see at in the
National Museum - and can enjoy free admission. Just across the canal,
Slotsholmen is a whole isle of museums, though we've classed it as a separate neighborhood.
Walking down from the National Museum to the waterfront, Gammel Strand was once the site of the city's fish market. Today, visitors come to visit contemporary art museum
Kunstforeningen Gammel Strand as well as the
street market, specializing in antiques.
Copenhagen has become world-famous for its gastronomic invention, so don't miss out on a visit to the city's purpose-built covered market
Torvehallerne København, a gourmet taste session of delis and takeouts on Israels Plads.
For families, Copenhagen's Indre Byen offers
Sømods Bolcher, a traditional candymaking shop offering free guided tours of the sweetmaking process and the hands-on
Post & Tele Museum, while the
Danish Design Centre (DDC) should be on the list of all design-hungry fans of clean Scandinavian minimalism.
