The Østerbro district of Copenhagen has a reputation more as a rather stately, residential suburb than as a quarter buzzing with nightlife options. This reputation is somewhat out-of-date, however: Today's Østerbro offers a very contemporary urban vibe with a smart outlook different from that of the capital's other boroughs, but still managing to offer plenty of action after dark. This includes stylish cocktail bars, lively clubs and offbeat theaters - as well as Denmark's national stadium,
Parken.
Top of our list is the incredibly popular nightclub, cafe and movie theater Park. A little bit of everything is offered in this complex, whether you're in the mood for dancing at
Park Diskotek or snuggling up in the back seats of
Park Bio.
Cafe Bopa is located on the lively square Bopa Plads and is one of Østerbro's less exclusive cafes, with a lively clientele that includes plenty of students and creative types who come for the live music sessions and DJ nights as well as the drinks and conversation.
Those who enjoy a good cocktail can expect good service even this far out of Copenhagen's center. Both
The Office Bar, by Sortedams Lake, and the more out-of-the-way
Kitjn are more than efficient when it comes to mixing a good drink.
Fans of unusual theater should check out
Republique, one of Copenhagen's newest theaters and one that specializes in international as well as more local live art and performance acts, including contemporary circus performers. Østerbro is also home to
Østre Gasværk Theater, a venue for offbeat musicals - like 2010's immensely popular Beatles extravaganza, "
Come Together".
Østerbro's only pub is
Macgraths, Denmark's only South African bar and quite a find, with its authentic corrugated iron bar and lively, sports-obsessed atmosphere.
