Chicago may not come to mind as an arts leader, but the truth is there is a plethora of art museums and galleries that span cultures, styles, and genres from local artists to world-renowned artists. The most well known museum in the city is the Art Institute of Chicago, known for its' impressive Impressionist collection and its' stellar new modern wing. Downtown it is also worth stopping by the Museum of Contemporary Art, especially for the superb performance series. On the same level, visit the world-renowned National Museum of Contemporary Art in Pilsen. This free museum does an outstanding job of showcasing a vibrant culture of Chicago. For another cultural art museum, head south to Hyde Park to visit the Dusable Museum of African-American History. In the same neighborhood, marvel at the Near East art collections at the Oriental Institute Museum, particularly the Egyptian Gallery. Also, in the neighborhood is the small, but impressive Smart Museum, which holds art ranging from the classical period to present. For something a little different, visit the Museum of Contemporary Photography, view "outsider art" at The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, view young talent at Gallery 37, and view works by local artists at the Hyde Park Arts Center.
