Chicago's Top Ten Places to Get Your Groove On
A night spent dancing is a night well spent. Nothing beats moving and grooving with friends with great music, and whether that means swingin' to the blues, shakin' it to some pop, or gettin' down with some soul, Chicago has a place you'll love. People flock to these spots --from top 40 lovers to hipsters to smooth operators--when they need to take it to the dance floor.
A hip gem in the middle of Wrigleyville, Smart Bar has been a standby place for Chicagoans for some time. On Sundays, check out DJ Kid Color's Dollar Disco where favorite DJ's spin new and classic disco/house jams. You won't be able to help yourself. Boystown's Berlin Nightclub has been around for years hosting some outrageous and iconic characters along the way. Its pan-cultural, queer-friendly environment welcomes all to dance to alternative electronic and frequent themed nights (block-rockin' 90's is the third Sunday of every month, just saying). The Hideout often hosts live music and intimate dancing. Check the schedule and make sure you get to Life During Wartime, a monthly event that's been setting the bar for hipster dance parties in Chicago since 2003. Head to the monthly Windy City Soul Club at The Empty Bottle in the Ukranian Village for a sweaty, soul-soaked party you'll never want to leave. Watch out for other dancers at Debonair Social Club in Wicker Park. You'll feel as if you've left the present and been transported to another place and time--a place and time where people are shakin' it on the dance floor, tables, and just about anywhere they can. Located off busy Damen Avenue, Danny's Tavern operates out of what used to be a house in Bucktown. Twice-weekly reggae nights and The Smiths every fourth Tuesday are big draws for an eclectic crowd. Go covert at The Underground in River North, designed to feel like an avant-garde, top-secret military hideaway. The list of international DJ's and recent ranking as one of Chicago's top celebrity hangouts make The Underground a great place to see, be seen, and get down. Head to legendary jazz joint The Green Mill in Uptown for a down-to-earth, sexy 30's and 40's vibe. You can dance the night away to live music--just don't forget your partner. The Hangge-Uppe is a staple in the (late night) Gold Coast night life scene. The first floor brings you music of the 50's through the 80's, and you can head upstairs for something more contemporary. If club music and the top 40 aren't your thing, head to the divey Burlington Bar where resident DJ's spin favorites from decades gone by. Beloved by locals, this Logan Square hipster hangout will stay low key but keep you moving.
