Café Del Sol began four years ago as a small but soulful bar in the backpacker area known locally as 'The Soi' off Ratvithi Road. Limitations on live music led the bar to relocate to near the Ping River, near the sprawling Night Bazaar and next door to Guitar Man. The larger venue now plays host to a variety of local bands and the occasional international guest, while both Thai and international DJs keep the vibe of Café Del Sol buzzing with a mix of hip hop, reggae, blues, funk, rock or whatever else fits the mood. Mana - the dreadlocked Thai owner - sets the laid back Rastafarian pace, while his partner in crime, Amy, will greet you with a smile or with one of Café Del Sol's signature Passion Fruit Mojitos. The new, bigger location allows the bar to throw regular parties, which are announced on its Facebook page. Cafe Del Sol is very popular with Chiang Mai expats and Thais, who often prefer its laid-back pace to the backpacker madness that can be The Soi. Head there for a few nights and some cheap cocktails and chances are you will have made some new local friends.
