    Celestun Transportation

    Getting to and away
Celestún is located 58 miles (93 km) from the Yucatán state capital of Mérida at the coastal end of Highway 281. The most efficient (but priciest) way to visit Celestún is to rent a car and drive yourself or sign up for a tour package that includes transportation, meal and boat tour. Getting to Celestún from Mérida by bus means a boring 2½ hour drive with little of interest to capture your eye (except for the domed colonial church in Uman). Frequent stops whenever and wherever passengers wish to get on or off will either fascinate you or make you crazy. These are second-class buses; that means no bathroom on board!

By Car: Take the Periférico (ring highway) to the southwestern part of the city. Turn west onto Highway 281 and follow the signs to the town of Uman. Continue toward Kinichil, passing through the pueblo of Samahil. From Kinichnil it is approximately 31 miles (49 km) to Celestún. The highway leads onto Calle 11, the main east-west street that ends at the beach. The main square lies at the intersection of Calles 8, 10, 11, and 13.

By Bus: Getting There: Second-class Oriente buses leave Mérida for Celestún from Terminal Noreste (Calle 67, between Calles 50 and 52) Oriente tel. +52 (999) 928-6230 (2 ½ hrs, every hour from 5am to 8pm, MX$47/US$4.70).

By Collectivo: Shared vans depart Mérida from Parque San Juan on the side nearest the children's playground (Calle 64, between 67 and 69) and arrive in Celestún's main square. Getting Away: Oriente operates daily buses from Celestún to Mérida every hour from 5:00am to 8:00pm (MX$47/US$4.70). The station is on the main square (Calle 13, between Calles 8 and 10), where you can usually purchase tickets. If no one is at the ticket counter, do not worry: you can buy the ticket from the driver.

Safety: The police station is located in the municipal building on Calle 13, between Calles 8 and 10, on the main square. +52 (988) 916-2053

Money: There is a Banorte ATM next to the municipal building on Calle 13, between Calles 8 and 10, on the main square. The nearest bank is in Umán. Post Office: Calle 12 #118. Open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 7 pomp

    Telephone: Caseta. Intersection of Calles 10 and 17. Open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m
