A great outing for families with children, the train trip out to Simon's Town offers stunning views of the coastline on one side and the mountains on the other. Ride in comfortable, wooden-bodied vintage coaches dating from 1922 to 1938, one of which serves as a lounge car with full-cash service. The train usually departs Cape Town at 10:30am and arrives in Fish Hoek (at noon) or Simon's Town (at 12:15) Then you can explore the historic village and enjoy a picnic on the beach before making starting the return trip (from Simonstown at 2:15pm or Fish Hoek at 2:30pm) and arriving back in Cape Town at 4:30pm.
