Utah is filled with spectacular national parks, and some of the best ones include Canyonlands and other nearby places. When you plan your Canyonlands visit, play around with your itinerary and see if you can include a visit to one of these other great national parks during your trip.
Arches goes hand-in-hand with Canyonlands on most visits due to its proximity. Its 2,000+ natural arches make a veritable garden of wild delights. Goblin Valley is a hoodoo-filled state park en route to Capitol Reef National Park, which is home to the Waterpocket Fold and historic pioneer orchards (where you are allowed to pick the delicious fruits!). From Capitol Reef, you'll pass through the spectacular, nearly 2-million acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument on your way to famous Bryce Canyon. Zion, home of the renowned Zion Narrows slot canyon, is the southernmost and oldest Utah national park.
Hovenweep National Monument was once home to ancient people who built circular structures out of stone. The roads there are remote and dirt, reminiscent of days long gone by. Mesa Verde National Park, just over the border in Colorado, is the only national park created to preserve a cultural rather than natural resource―fabulous Cliff Palace is its most famous ruin. Canyon de Chelly is one of the longest inhabited areas in the Northern hemisphere―how mind-boggling is that? And Chaco Canyon, deliberately designed home of an ancient society that many scholars claim was the pinnacle of their culture, is breathtaking and not all that far from Canyonlands.
