Romantic Cancun
Description:
It's hard to imagine a place more romantic than the Caribbean. There are things for every couple to enjoy here -- fascinating ancient Mayan history, amazing ecological conservation programs and parks, and more ways to play in the water than you could every dream up. And, of course, great ways to relax, too.

Day 1 - Cancun
There are many all-inclusive resorts in the Cancun area, but Le Blanc is one of the few that is truly worth every penny. The service here is beyond outstanding, and the food at all of the on-site restaurants is great. There are several tours included, as well as food, drinks, spa treatments, and lovely welcome packages, and of course use of their private beach and several pools. After you've checked into the hotel and gotten settled in, head to the hotel spa for a couples massage, the perfect way to begin your week of relaxation together. If you feel like having dinner away from the hotel, try La Habichuela in downtown Cancun. Off the tourist track, you'll be able to lounge in the middle of a plant-covered patio strung with little twinkly lights. Family-owned and run, the service is warm and personal, and the fresh seafood is simply delicious. Afterwards, stop by Beach Bar to enjoy a drink or two on the terrace, where you can enjoy the warm night breezes and the beautiful ocean view before heading back to the hotel.

Day 2 - Cancun
Begin your day with a training session at the Nautilus Dive center, then head out with their skilled, energetic guides. You'll be in the best hands with them as you explore the local reefs, wrecks, and cenotes around Cancun's crystal blue waters. Make it to the ranch a bit south of town for an afternoon oceanside horseback ride. There are several trips that go out throughout the day here. The afternoon is particularly enjoyable, as you can swim on horseback, which is a great way to cool off after a ride along jungle and beach paths. There's snacks and drinks provided, and definitely pack some sunscreen and wear a bathing suit under your clothes for when you go in the water. There's a local trio that plays during dinner on the weekends at Labna, where the cuisine is as traditional Yucatanese as it gets. Although not showy in presentation, the amazing flavors and dramatic Mayan decor make this a great place to feast on local fare. Share the Special, a course of four dishes, to try a variety including tender suckling pig.

Day 3 - Cancun
Take a day trip down the coast to visit some of the more remarkable Mayan historic sites on the peninsula. In the morning, explore Tulum, one of the main centers of Mayan commerce. Located on black cliffs over several beautiful beaches, you can spend several hours wandering this walled city. The beaches below are great for swimming and sunbathing if you feel like relaxing, too. There are usually several knowledgeable tour guides milling about who will walk with you through the ruins and provide some historical background for a small fee. Get a break from the sun at the small, intimate restaurant Cetli. The attention to detail here can easily be seen in their truly innovative take on local cuisine. Spend the afternoon at the Xel-Ha natural park, where there are so many ways to enjoy the waters. Definitely try snorkeling in the lagoon, where there are many endemic aquatic species, hike among the mangrove forests, float down the underground river, swim with dolphins, or try cliff-diving. There are plenty of hammocks and beach umbrellas and chairs to relax on, and great food included with the entry price to snack on. Bring a water camera for all the underwater sights. When you get back into the city, head to Blue Bayou for dinner, one of Cancun's most romantic restaurants. You'll enjoy their Cajun cuisine surrounded by fragrant gardens as the notes of their live jazz band floats past.

Day 4 - Cancun
Travel south of Cancun for the day to visit the ecoparks down the coast, including the Hidden Worlds Cenotes Park and Xcaret. There's tons to do at these parks, from tubing down rivers, jungle snorkeling tours, zipline adventures, and swimming with turtles. These parks are a great way to explore the native Yucatan flora and fauna, as they focus on conservation and education as well as tourism. As an example, there's an amazing sea turtle rearing program at Xcaret that you can visit to see the babies, but also is part of the largest sea turtle conservation program in Mexico. You'll get to surround yourself with the beauty of nature and support their important efforts at the same time. Finish your day with a relaxing dinner at Laguna Grill, on the lagoon's edge. The creativity of the Asian-Mexican fusion and great wine list here are just part of the experience, as are the view and the tropical gardens around the restaurant's patio.

Day 5 - Cancun
Journey by ferry to Isla Mujeres for the day, and relax on this little island's numerous beaches. Although a great place to visit, Isla Mujeres has managed to maintain its homey local atmosphere. The best way to get around is to rent a golf cart to travel between spots, and to explore the many quaint local shopping and dining establishments. Take an hour or two in the afternoon to share an incredible experience at Dolphin Discovery, where you'll get a chance to interact and play with these extraordinary creatures. Hop on the ferry back to the hotel in the evening, and get ready to head out on the hotel's dinner cruise. Sailing for a few hours through the Nichupte Lagoon, you can savor the sunset together over a gourmet lobster (or another choice) dinner and delicious tropical cocktails.

Day 6 - Cancun
For a fascinating look into the area's past, take a trip to Isla Contoy with Kolumbus Tours. You'll feel like you're part of history aboard their replica ships. There's a stop along the reef for a quick snorkel, then you'll travel on to Isla Contoy, a bird sanctuary full of rare and incredible tropical species. Their highly knowledgeable tour guides are well-versed in the historical and ecological background of the area, and make this journey informative as well as beautiful. Lunch is also a highlight, as a crew member grills up freshly caught right out of the water. After you arrive back in Cancun, dry off with a walk around downtown to visit some of the beautiful architecture of the area's churches, such as Iglesia de Nuestra Senora del Carmen and Iglesia de Cristo Rey. End the day with dinner at sweet and cozy La Valentina. There are specialties on the menu from many of Mexico's finest cooks, and they're best enjoyed along with one of the fine tequilas off their extensive list.
