Cancun is surrounded by water so it's no wonder that water sports enthusiasts flock to the area.
Scuba diving at the world's second-largest coral reef, the Mayan Barrier Reef, is nearby. Many hotels offer a beginner's class for scuba diving right in their pools. There, people can become certified to go on a shallow-water dive. For visitors that want to become PADI-certified divers, Aquaworld Cancun offers classes.
Snorkeling tours are very popular, since the water is so clear and because there are so many different types of fish and sea life to view underwater. During the Summer months, it's quite possible to even see sea turtles while snorkeling. Tours to the Cancun Underwater Museum allow you to see hundreds of sculptures that have been placed underwater, to form the museum.
Deep-sea fishing charters can be arranged for private or shared fishing excursions. Full and half-day trips are offered. For those that enjoy the water, but prefer relaxing on a boat, there are catamaran cruises to the tiny island of Isla Mujeres available.
Swimming with dolphins, or spending the day at Wet 'n Wild water park are also fun ways to beat the heat.
