Diving and Snorkeling in Cancun
Cancun is surrounded by water so it's no surprise that snorkeling and scuba diving are two of the area's most popular activities. Part of Cancun's hotel zone is on the Caribbean Sea. The water on that side of the hotel zone is too rough for you to snorkel from shore, but there are plenty of snorkel and dive tours available and they take you out to calmer waters.
The Mexican Whale Shark Snorkel Adventure is a wonderful tour that allows you to swim/snorkel with whale sharks in their natural habitat--the open sea. Being so close to the giant, yet harmless, creatures is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whale sharks migrate to the Cancun area during the Summer months so this tour is only available from June to September.
Tours to Cancun's most recent attraction, the Cancun Underwater Museum (also known as MUSA), are also quite popular. This unique museum is comprised of hundreds of sunken sculptures that will grow coral. As the coral grows, the museum will change so, even if you visit the site during this year's vacation, you'll want to visit it on your next trip too.
Asterix Tours offers tours to Isla Contoy and, on the way to the island, you will have the opportunity to snorkel. While on the island, you can relax on the beach, or snorkel just off the shore.
