Campeche is beautiful little city on the Gulf of Mexico with many activities to keep the visitor occupied. Among the best things to do are city walks, explorations of Mayan ruins, shopping, and water sports in the warm salt water.
My #1 choice is the Fuerte Museo San Miguel, a hillside fort south of the city that has been converted into an excellent archeology museum. After viewing the famous jade funerary masks from Calakmul, climb to the roof to enjoy expansive views of the Bay of Campeche.
Taking the #2 spot is actually a group of structures: Campeche's Spanish colonial-era forts and defensive walls. They make the Campeche one of the few remaining intact walled cities in North and South America.
An easy day trip is my #3 suggestion: the Edzna Archeological Zone. These Mayan ruins have been partially and beautifully restored with the showpiece being the massive yet elegant Palace of Five Floors.
