Description:
When the first train-loads of settlers began coming to Calgary in the 1880's, many of the wealthy English noble family sent their third born sons to Canada in hopes that they could stay alive, in case their older brothers should die young. While the railroad worked its way through the mountains, Calgary was the end of the line, and many settlers came this way, including many of these nobles. Now, when they left England, they would've first arrived in Montreal, then boarded a train for the west. Once they got off the train in Calgary, it seems many of them wandered to the point of first resistance, ie. a hill, and stopped. They named this district Mt. Royal (ie. English for Montreal). This is the area where the Lougheed House is, today, and this house is a testament to the times of early settlers and the few who had great family wealth. Today, you can tour the house for a fee to see first hand the sort of life-style these people led. The restaurant is very good, as well.
