Calgary's history is relatively short. We don't have the Tower of London or the Colosseum in our back yard. Europeans have only been here for 125 years. However, Calgary has a surprising amount of great historical attractions. These can take you back to your days as a child when you played games, such as cowboys and indians or pretended to be in the army or a world-champion athlete. They can spark the childish delight you once had in dinosaurs, or simply satisfy your desire to see beautiful art-work and culture.
Heritage Park is one of Calgary's best attractions for kids. It has a huge collection of old cars, a few of the very best old-school rides, such as 'the Whip'; it has a candy store, a bakery, and an ice cream shoppe. It has farm animals and even a steam-engine train that you can ride. Tour around the grounds to different stages of Calgary's history, from the old fort of the 1880's to the main street of the 1920's.
The Royal Tyrrell Museum is a provincial treasure. This paleontology museum is world-class, and the only one of its kind in Canada. Here you'll find full size, dinosaur-skeletal displays, including the great Tyrannosaurus Rex. You'll also learn more than you ever thought you could know about our geologic history. This is one of Alberta's top destinations.
The Military Museum is one of Calgary's most interesting spots. It offers a glimpse at Canada's proud military history, from WW1 through the present. Experience life in the trenches and learn the stories of Canada's "Stormtroopers."
The Glenbow Museum is Calgary's biggest museum, and it regularly brings in exhibits from around the world. The other museums in Calgary offer a unique look at a particular niche, such as firefighters, aero-space, and the Olympic Games.
