Northwest Calgary is home of the University and SAIT. It also has a lot of recreational options with the Bow River and Nose Hill Park. The C-Train connects the NW to downtown, conveniently, but ultimately it's a great launching off point for day trips to Banff. Many of the Calgarys' best Bed and Breakfasts are in the NW.
An English Bed & Breakfast and Day Spa is considered one of Calgary's best B&Bs. Teri and David are very knowledgeable hosts, and they have great recommendations for restaurants and things to do in Calgary. They also run the Day Spa out of their home. There is a hot tub available for guests, and the whole main floor is reserved for visitors, only.
The Hotel Alma is a unique concept. Wholly owned by the University of Calgary, it is the only one of its kind in North America. The design was done in partnership with the students, and it is one of Calgary's most modern hotels.
Staying near Canada Olympic Park provides lots of recreation at the Park, but it also makes getting out of town ahead of traffic much easier. 16th Ave is the Calgary leg of Highway 1, aka the Trans-Canada Highway, which will take you straight to Banff.
