17th Avenue SW is one of Calgary's most well known shopping districts. Walking up and down the "Uptown" will take you past coffee shops, restaurants, and boutique shops. This area, affectionately called "The Red Mile," was the scene of Calgary's most spontaneous moment of collective celebration during the Calgary Flames run to the 2004 Stanley Cup finals. The epicenter of the celebrations was Melrose Bar, which is still doing business on 17th.
The Beltline hotels are the closest to 17th. There are no major hotels on 17th, itself. But, Best Western, Nuvo, and Hotel Arts are all within walking distance. The Beltline is largely apartments and high-occupant housing, but there are a few interesting things, such as the Laugheed House, nearby. These hotels are sometimes easier to find parking for than the others downtown.
The next closest area, with the nicest hotels, too, is downtown. The Hotel Le Germain is Calgary's best hotel, by consensus. The Palliser offers a look back at Calgary's past, and is a great hotel. The Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton, and Westin all offer name brand options. These hotels are quite a long walk from 17th, for the most part, but it is possible to walk there in under 20 minutes.
