On the whole, Calgary is an expensive city to live in compared to the other major Canadian centers. Food can be pricey, but that's not to say the city is without its fair share of cheap dining. For those on a budget, there's plenty of charming Mom & Pop joints and greasy-spoon diners to satisfy a wide range of tastes. For the real deals, you'll have to venture slightly off the beaten path. More tourist-heavy areas like 17th ave and the downtown core are less likely to have fare to suit your budget, but neighboring areas such as Kensington and 14th street are sure to have what you're looking for. On the east side of downtown, try a jaunt up Edmonton Trail - a densely populated inner-city traffic artery, the street will take you from downtown northward right up to the Transcanada highway, hitting several of Calgary's most delectable and affordable eats along the way. Of course, like any city, the best deals are all over the map, it just takes a little exploring... so hit the streets, and find your new favorite dive!
