Sometimes on cold winter days in Calgary, the best thing to do is to hide away in a cinema and watch a movie. But, let's be honest, going to the movies is fun any time of year. Calgary cinemas typically are multiplex facilities, having 10+ screens. But, there are a few that cater to the indie crowd. And, the Calgary International Film Festival is growing in popularity every year.
The Plaza Theatre in Kensington shows a fusion of indie and blockbuster films; the Uptown and Globe are downtown on 8th Ave, and they also tend to show films that are indie, although they also sometimes have more commercial offerings. These three are the only cinemas in Calgary where you can find off-beat movies, though.
Famous Players, Cineplex Odeon, and Empire Theatres all compete for the blockbuster market. Chinook Centre has one of Calgary's most popular cinemas, the Scotiabank Theatre. It has an IMAX screen, on which many 3D shows are displayed. Silver City is north Calgary's popular theatre.
For blockbuster films on a budget, the Moviedome and Canyon Meadows show movies that are a few months after initial release, but at a significant bargain. Moviedome is also known for showing Bollywood films that you can't find anywhere else in Calgary.
