Description:
Munch and Bagel on
Zamalek is undoubtedly the place to go if you are craving a bagel. It was never intended to be a cafe so much as a takeaway and delivery service, but it does have a couple of small round tables, and a few formica seats at the counter facing the wall.
Munch and Bagel sells sandwiches (in French bread or Ciabatta) plus bagels - all the normal meats and cheeses, along with Philadelphia and smoked salmon, and breakfast bagels with eggs in. The pastrami bagel is particularly good, loaded with pastrami and cheese and whichever salads and sauces you want - you choose from the counter in the same way as at Subway.
Munch and Bagel also does a small selection of pretty good salads - again, you can control what you do and don't want in it. Some of them, such as the chicken salad, are easily large enough to act as a main meal. They also have sweet Belgian waffles available, and a selection of freshly baked muffins, many of which are on the healthy side (carrot, bran and raisin, and so on).
The staff at Munch and Bagel are friendly, attentive and eager to please, and the food is fresh, tasty and filling. You can get filter coffee here, and if there's space it's actually quite a nice place to sit and have a drink, because it's completely no smoking, and they play a Cairo-based English radio station instead of MTV. Be warned, though, there is no toilet at Munch and Bagel.
