New Cairo

New Cairo, known in Egyptian as al-Qahira al-Gadida, is a new city built in the desert to the east of Maadi, and south of Nasr City. Planned out in 2001, New Cairo is continually expanding, as more and more of Cairo's middle and upper class families aspire to move out here. It is cleaner and much less chaotic than Cairo proper, and – owing partly to its elevation – enjoys a slightly cooler climate, too!

Much of New Cairo consists of luxury villas and gated communities, and a number of businesses have also moved out here. There are also numerous schools and universities, such as the new campus of the American University in Cairo, and the Future University of Egypt.

There isn't a lot to attract tourists out here, although Rehab City is a collection of malls, restaurants and cinemas that may hold some appeal, and there are leisure developments such as the Katameya Heights Golf and Tennis resort.
