Cairo's not necessarily a city you would visit for an active holiday, but that doesn't mean it's all just museums, monuments, and markets. A good way to get out and about is to do a walking tour. The Solar CITIES Urban Eco Tour goes through two very interesting areas of Cairo - historic Darb al-Ahmar and Manshiyat Nasr (home to the Zabaleen garbage collectors) - and you'll get a chance to see how some of Cairo's poorest residents are using home-made green technology to improve their lives. If photography is more your thing, the Cairo Photography Walking tour covers a lot of ground, as well as giving you the opportunity to snap some fantastic pictures.
Other active ways to spend your time in Cairo include heading out into the desert by the Pyramids on either a camel or a horse, or taking a stroll around the beautiful al-Azhar Park in Islamic Cairo. If sport is what you're after, there are a number of golf courses in Cairo, such as the one at the Mena House Oberoi Hotel.
Finally, if you really want to get active, head out of Cairo. Wadi Degla in Maadi offers the chance for hiking and biking, or - if you are feeling really adventurous - take a trip down to Fayoum and visit the Wadi Rayan national park. There are lakes and a waterfall to explore, and you could also hire a jeep and hike around the other-worldly Wadi Hitan, Valley of the Whales.
