Edificio Kavanagh
Address:
Florida 1065
Buenos Aires, Argentina
NileGuide Expert tip:
Legend goes that the Kavanagh was constructed out of revenge against the wealthy Anchorena family. Corina Kavanagh had fallen in love with an Anchorena son but the relationship was cut short by family rivalry. Thus she commissioned the towering building to block the view from the family's palace in Plaza San Martin of their ornate, gold-encrested church, across the park.
Description:
The towering Edificio Kavanagh is a Rationalist landmark in Buenos Aires' Plaza San Martin. Begun in 1934 and finished 2 years later, the building was commissioned by noueavu riche dame Corina Kavanagh and designed and constructed by architects Gregorio Sánchez, Ernesto Lagos and Luis María de la Torre. At 120 meters and 29 stories high, the residential building, the first example of early Modernism in Argentina, was for a time the tallest building in South America and the highest reinforced concrete structure in the world. In 1999, the Kavanagh was declared a National Historic Monument.
