Just by walking along Budapest's most famous boulevard or by taking part in a guided tour, it is impossible to get to know the city in its real local sense. It is by delving a little deeper and discovering hidden gems that one experiences the real taste of a city, and it is those hidden treasures off the beaten path that make a city worth visiting!
To start off with, wonder about the narrow streets of District VII (the Jewish District) for some local air. Visit the Orthodox Synagogue that will surprise by looking nothing like a synagogue. Walk across the extensive Gozsdu Udvar marvelling at the line of arches hidden behind an average looking iron gate, then visit the alternative vintage shop Retrock for some funky bits and pieces that could make great souvenirs.
The King's Bath, not so well known amongst tourists, boasts with beautiful Turkish interior decoration.
Budapest isn't a famous marzipan-manufacturing city, but Szamos makes great marzipan that is renowned for its quality amongst locals. Visit the Marzipan Museum and the Szamos Café for a real alternative treat!
Not many people associate Budapest with caves, but a vast underground cave system dominates Budapest from below: discover Budapest from underneath by visiting the Buda Castle Labyrinth made easily accessible just for the comfort of visitors! The Cave Church is not quite underground, but is located inside the Gellért Hill.
Last but not least, the Memento Park: This vast park-like area is where all the Soviet statues have been banished after the collapse of the regime in Hungary.
