Heading off but have a few hours to kill before the journey? Then it's these attractions that will keep you occupied without having to miss the train! Located in the heart of the VI. District (the „down town" of Budapest), many of the city's must see attractions are located near the Nyugati Railway Station.
West End has been chosen as our top pick not because of its cultural qualities, but because of its favorable location right next to the Railway Station. If you're not feeling particularly creative, it's a great place kill several hours just wondering about!
The major site near the railway station is the Houses of Parliament, to which the Alkotmány Street (no. 10) leads, famous for its architecture. This is roughly a 5 minute walk. Behind the Parliament is our next pick, the bronze shoes lined along the Embankment, serving as a memorial.
The next three picks are found along the Andrássy Avenue, longest boulevard of the city and only a few minutes walk away from the station: The Opera House, House of Terror and the Liszt Ferenc Square with the Liszt Ferenc Statue and Academy of Music. It's also a great place for eating out or just having a relaxing drink.
Liberty Square is also just a 5 minute walk from the station, with buildings such as the US Embassy and the Hungarian National Bank, the last remaining Soviet monument of the city, a fun fountain and a bubble-like café in the winter.
Towards Buda along the Great Ring Road, two attractions can be found, again a few minutes walk away: The Vígszínház Theatre and the Margaret Island. The only reason these two received such a low ranking is because they are more time consuming to visit than the above listed picks.
