"Kifőzde's" and local food chains provide cheap eating in Budapest. And going cheap doesn't necessarily mean having to compromise quality: It's no luxury surroundings, but the food is as good as any, and the portions even larger...!
Our first two picks are so-called kifőzde's or small eateries serving home-made style food. The Kádár Étkezde in the heart of the Jewish District takes first place with Budapest's best non-kosher Jewish and traditional Hungarian home cooking. The Kisharang Étkezde; a small family run bistro serving traditional Hungarian foods at rock-bottom prices takes second place.
In third place is the Menza, a classy yet affordable restaurant on the central Liszt Ferenc Square, with lovely terrace seating.
Ellátó, a fashionably "shabby-chic" bar/restaurant in the heart of the Jewish District is our fourth pick.
In fifth place is the cosy Csiga Café with wooden tables oozing old world charm offering generous portions and traditional Hungarian cuisine.
In sixth place is the a local food chain, the Főzelékfaló serving a huge variety of vegetable stew traditionally topped with sausages or deep fired meat and veg.
Our seventh pick is another chain, the Nagyi Palacsintázója serving a large variety of savoury and sweet paper thin palacsinta that you can pick and mix according to filling.
In last place, and only so because of serving fast food is the completely insignificant looking Lángos Bár making the best lángos in Budapest!
