Outside the park
Outside of Bryce Canyon National Park are the towns of Tropic, Cannonville and Hatch. These quaint little places, bastions of old Mormon ranching families and sun-weathered canyon wanderers (aka desert rats), support little more than gas stations and the occasional eatery for travelers. Check out
Red Canyon, a natural area inside the sprawling Dixie National Forest, situated between Bryce Canyon and
Zion National Park, for some sweet mountain biking trails that wind through a miniature version of Bryce's hoodoos.
Some of the best luxury local lodging just outside Bryce is the decidedly upscale
Stone Canyon Inn, with the
Buffalo Sage B&B offering a romantic little getaway for you lovebirds out there. Look into the
Bryce View Lodge and
Best Western Ruby's Inn for an affordable, straight-up motel experience. Food around these little towns does not bode too well for your taste buds, but head farther east toward Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and the teeny-tiny, but history-rich, towns of Escalante and Boulder. Make a point to stop at
Esca-Latte Internet Café,
Kiva Koffeehouse, and
Hell's Backbone Grill for some utterly unexpected and absolutely outstanding culinary treats.
