Fifteen miles west of Boulder is a small town called
Nederland, a place 8236 feet above sea level and filled with small western town idiosyncrasies such as Frozen Dead Guy Days, a festival based around a cryogenically-frozen grandfather kept in a shack behind a Nederland resident's house, complete with coffin races and "Frozen Dead Guy" lookalike contests.
Kinetics is one of those bizarre small-town events that only people from that town think is normal, and even that's a stretch. Started in 1980, Kinetics is a race across land, mud, and water with teams using human-powered vehicles, but it's essentially an excuse for groups of people to dress in costume not on Halloween and to adopt personas that correspond to their costumes.
