Description:

The presidential palace was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the very site of where Antonio Narino was born and after being partially destroyed in the Bogotazo riots of April 9th, 1948, following the assassination of the Liberal presidential candidate, Gaitán was restored to its former opulence. Making up one side of the phenomenal Plaza de Bolivar, the Palacio is an architectural masterpiece in a neo-classical style. While access is restricted to the Palace for the obvious reason of being the official residence of the President, you can walk around the sides of the compound and enjoy views into the fine gardens from behind the railings. You will see the presidential guard in their ceremonial uniforms and if you are lucky enough perhaps catch the changing of the guard. The first Observatory in Colombia is found within the gardens as well.
