Nestled in the cliffs and coves of Big Sur's expansive wilderness is the New Camaldoli Hermitage. Spiritualism and nature unite in this house of God, inhabited by monks of the Camaldolese Benedictine order. Here, the brothers (joyfully) labor in hospitality, retreats, a book store, writing, and original art, pottery, and music. Any traveler is welcome to come to the hermitage for a respite.
The monks open the doors of the hermitage to those seeking a quiet place to reflect in the expansive scenery that surrounds the grounds. Silence is a hallmark of the hermitage, though don't except stern faces and stone-age accommodations. The hermitage takes full advantage of the lush scenery and goes out of its way to make guests comfortable while still providing a truly reflective experience.
