Beijing is an outdoor city. Located about the same latitude as Reno, the weather isn't as "northern" as many expect and this plays into the wonderful outdoor traditions Beijingers have developed over the years. With a multitude of parks, boating opportunities and outdoor tourist sites you're sure to spend a great deal of your time under the Beijing sun.
Some of the city's more impressive parks include Chaoyang Park, located in the east of the city, Jingshan Park, located directly north of the Forbidden city, and the Beijing Amuseument Park, located just outside the city. All offer a bit of recreational fun as well as some cultural highlights and a unique look at Chinese landscaping and architecture.
To soak up some culture while soaking in your vitamin D for the day, check out the Forbidden City, which is essentially all outdoors. You can peek through glass windows into the various rooms of the mansion but you'll also find quiet corners for a picnic or snooze.
You won't have time to snooze on the Great Wall, however. This serious climb isn't for the meek. Even the easiest section called Ba Da Ling is a challenge for the fully fit. But never fear, if you take it slow (or take the cable car) you'll find a beautiful view awaiting at the summit.
Take a stroll down famous Nanluoguxiang, a converted alley that houses the traditional old-style homes. From there you can check out Houhai Lake, surrounded with weeping willows and with the offer of boat rides and cotton candy.
Finally, if you want some fast-paced action in your life check out the bike course at Laoshan. You'll be amazed at the varied course and equipment rentals are available on the spot.
