The Temple of Heaven is a beautiful scenic spot where you can both enjoy a picnic in the grass away from tourists or else push your way to the front of pagodas and see giant towering statues of gods and men. The temple of Heaven is located on line 5 which means you have access to the entire city using the metro. This makes travel to and from the temple quite easy. Still, there are many things to see and do around the area.
The Hall of Prayer is nearby, meaning you could literally make a religious day out of your trip to the south of the city.
If shopping is more your fancy, the Silk company as well as carpet factory are nearby. If you don't know a great deal about the item you are shopping for then beware of fakes. If they bargain too easily you might be dealing with a counterfeit.
The New World Plaza is a massive shopping center and the famous Qianmen Market Street is close enough that a short cab ride will suffice. Both offer fun shopping. The former for brand name items and the latter for cultural trinkets and souvenirs.
Finally, there are museums in the area. The Museum of Architecture and the Museum of Natural history are both nearby and offer insight into Chinese culture and learning as well as a fun way to spend an afternoon.
