Beijing made global headlines with their impressive infrastructure development around the 2008 Olympics. The creation of the Olympic Green and Olympic Village in the north of the city was a monumental undertaking that resulted, ultimately, in a beautiful athletic zone. Today, the Olympic Village is still worth a visit to gaze in awe upon the Bird's Nest, Water Cube and the impressive avenue that caters to both of them.
Around the Village there are multiple venues worth a visit. You'll want to stop at the Bird's Nest and Water Cube, but the archery field was also in the vicinity, as was the hockey stadium, tennis court and gymnasium. A stroll around these fields is enjoyable, though recently the city has undertaken new construction in the area, including plans to connect the Olympic subway line 8 to the longstanding line 13, making the line more versatile for local commuters.
The Olympic Village isn't the only thing in the area. You'll find the Yan Huang Art Museum within walking distance of line 8, a beautiful tour through Chinese art and cosmopolitan culture. Nearby, you'll find the Chinese Sports Museum, which explains the country's long history in athletics, culminating in the 2008 hosting of the Olympics which the world viewed as a monumental success.
