Barcelona is a city rich in culture and above all historical significance. Ciutat Vella (old city) is at the heart of Barcelona's historical ties, with the Gothic Quarter housing some of the oldest and most renowned architecture in the world. Even if history's not 'your thing' you can't leave Barcelona without checking out at least a few of its famous historical sites.
Our number two pick is a day trip outside of Barcelona, but it's definitely worth a visit, especially if you're spending a few days in the city. Montserrat, is one Catalunya's most religious sites and on top of the mountain you'll find a monastery, museum and church which are all worth a visit.
Heading back into town, our number six choice invited you into an underground city. The History Museum of Barcelona, features 4000 square meters of Roman ruins buried 20 meters underneath street level. This is an extremely informative and interesting museum, which will give you an overall history in terms of Barcelona's evolution.
Mentioned previously, yet worth emphasizing, is our number nine pick, Bario Gotico. The Gothic Quarter sits at the heart of ciutat vella and is full of medieval alleyways, windy courtyards and small, nooks and crannies each with their own story to tell. This is a must see if you're coming to Barcelona, both for its historical significance amongst many other reasons, including a thriving nightlife and vibrant ambiance.
