The Bangor Museum and History Center's expansive collection and archives seeks to tell the intriguing stories of the people and places that have been vital to the growth and development of Bangor, Maine. A highlight of the museum's holdings are more than 10,000 photographs, tintypes and glass plate negatives which offer a vibrant, visual feel for Bangor history. Also of special note is the museum's ownership of Civil War artifacts, including the sword used by Maine hero General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain as well as letters and diaries written by Union soldiers. Many of these treasures are displayed in the museum's Thomas A. Hill House and Civil War Museum which is open to the public from June to October. For those fascinated by the history of rustic Maine, the Bangor Museum and History Center is definitely a "must visit" attraction.
