Description:

While Acadia National Park is an ideal location for most outdoor activities including hiking, walking, kayaking (as well as snow shoeing and cross country skiing in the winter), cycling deserves special mention among things to do at Acadia. Those who would rather not bring their own wheels can find quality bike rentals at nearby shops such as Acadia Bike and Canoe or Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop, which are both located in Bar Harbor. The sheer expansiveness of mountain and road biking trails at Acadia makes it one of the prime destinations for cycling enthusiasts on the Maine coast. Furthermore, the accessibility of these trails – most are level or feature only slight upgrades – make them popular with bicyclists of all abilities and levels. The park's famous 45 miles of carriage roads are a good example. While most of these thoroughfares are level or feature gentle up or down grades, they course through the park's best and most breathtaking scenery with interesting but safe twists and turns. Beyond the carriage roads, trails like the 9-mile long Jordan and Bubble Pond bike trail take cyclists further into the park to enjoy compelling scenery such as towering Penobscot Mountain or the pastoral beauty of Jordan Pond. Cyclists – especially mountain bikers – frequently bemoan the scarcity of good trails to travel. At Acadia, however, there are enough places to ride to keep any biker happy and pedaling for days on end.
