Found in Canmore's Grotto Mountain, Rat's Nest Cave is not a show cave. It's not a simple walk-in, walk-out. You need a tour guide. But, it is open year-round, and it's in pristine condition, because it gets well taken care of. This cave has been open for thousands of years, and it's been known of by Europeans for over 150 years. But, only since the 1950's has there been much traffic in the cave. These days it is one of the areas most explored caves. It takes about 3 hours to get through it. And, participants have to be prepared to get muddy getting through the tight "Laundry Chute". Rat's Nest Cave is not for claustrophobic people. The journey also includes an 18m rappel, as well. Tour outfitters will provide all the gear necessary to explore the cave. Typically prices are in the $100 range, although it can be a little higher than that.
