Description:
The Harmon Gallery, Banff's first photographic gallery, opened in 1906 by Byron Harmon, an American with an adventurous, mountain-loving spirit. He became famous for his shop, which held the world's largest collection of Rocky Mountain photography. Byron Harmon would go on to become the official photographer of The Alpine Club of Canada, which allowed him an opportunity to try to photograph every mountain peak in the Rockies. Byron's trip to the Columbia Icefields in 1924 is a story of legend, but it was featured in National Geographic magazine, furthering the fame of Harmon's name. Byron's legacy was taken up by his youngest son, Don, who introduced the first commercial printed color photographs to Banff as calendars, postcards, and viewbooks. The gallery continues to the present day under the guidance of Carole Harmon, Don's daughter, who works out of Banff and Vancouver. The Harmon name continues to be a famous one in photographic circles, and the gallery regularly hosts exhibits of Rocky Mountain photography.
