Canmore is not a district or suburb of Banff. It is its own unique town. It's not confined by the rules and regulations of the National Park, either, because it's just outside the boundary. Canmore is a jumping off point for Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park. It is an old mining town turned tourist destination that is surrounded by mountains in every direction. In fact, the mountain views from Canmore far exceed the quality of the mountain views in the town of Banff.
Canmore is dedicated to the athlete and adventurer. Many hiking and biking trails are near Canmore. The Nordic Centre is the Olympic cross-country ski team's training area (and a favorite of the locals). Goat Creek is a bike path that leads from Canmore to Banff. It's about an 18 kilometer ride.
Rat's Nest Cave is in Grotto Mountain. It requires a guide to accompany you. But, because of the protective measures in place, the cave has remained in good shape, despite being a popular adventurer's spot. It takes about 3 hours to make it through the cave. It's a messy, muddy adventure, and not one for the timid or the physically unfit. But, if you can make it, it has some of the most unique photo spots in Alberta.
Warner Guiding, Brewster Adventures, and the Canadian Rockies Rafting and Adventure Centre all do horseback riding trips from Canmore. Both day trips and overnight trips are available. This is a truly authentic Albertan experience, and a rare chance to befriend a living pioneer and cowboy.
