Downtown Banff is a heavily visited area. Along Banff Avenue on busy weekends, it can sometimes be hard to find space for yourself on the sidewalk. The town's main shopping, restaurant, and hotel district can be too busy to be enjoyable. But, just a few blocks off the main strip, it can feel like a totally different town. Banff isn't very big. In fact, it can be walked from end to end in less than an hour. But, the difference between a street with 50,000 people on it and one where it's just you is enormous.
The Banff Springs Hotel is a 20-30 minute walk from downtown Banff. It is an icon, a palace in the Rockies. No other hotel in Canada compares to the Banff Springs in terms of the beauty of its location. It is majestic. Just down from the hotel is Bow Falls, a famous (but kind of unspectacular) waterfall. There are lots of little hiking trails and tea houses around the hotel. For those looking to avoid the crowds, though, take note that downtown gets the most traffic, but the Banff Springs is a close second.
The Rimrock has, in my opinion, even more spectacular mountain views than the Banff Springs. It is located up the road by the Upper Hot Springs. The hotel has some of Western Canada's best restaurants, a great spa, and probably the best views of the Rockies anywhere in Banff (excluding the Gondola). From the Rimrock, it takes about 45 minutes to walk into downtown Banff.
The Douglas Fir, on Tunnel Mountain Road, has one of Banff's only waterslides. It is a great place to stay with children. It is also a closer walk to downtown than the Banff Springs or the Rimrock.
