Banff National Park is a world-famous tourist attraction for good reason. It has some of the most picturesque landscapes, the most impressive wildlife, and a host of adventure activities. But, it's also easily accessible and provides luxurious catering to its guest's needs. The town of Banff is a major draw for tourist traffic because of its hotels, shops, and restaurants, but there's a lot more to the National Park than the townsite. For travelers looking to experience nature, quiet, and peace, these lodges and hotels are probably a better fit.
Moraine Lake and the Valley of Ten Peaks is one of Canada's most spectacular natural settings. In fact, it's an iconic Canadian landscape that found itself on the $20 bill. The Moraine Lake Lodge, which is away from the crowds of both Banff and Lake Louise, is an eco-friendly lodge that is almost entirely self-sufficient. The lodge is right on the banks of the lake, and it is surrounded by hiking trails. The restaurant on-site is excellent. Similar to the Moraine Lodge, but less famous, is the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge on Bow Lake. This lodge is off of the Banff-Jasper Highway, and Bow Lake gets almost none of the tourist traffic that Lake Louise gets. This lodge has been in business since before the highway was made, and its operators know the legends of the lake better than anyone else.
Back-country lodges, such as Skoki Lodge, which was the first commercial ski lodge in Alberta, give a whole different experience than a traditional hotel. These are generally free of electricity and running water. But, they are beautiful, serene, and simply comfortable.
The only ski-in, ski-out lodge in Banff National Park is the Sunshine Mountain Lodge, which is at the base of the Sunshine Village ski hill. Guests have to take a 20 minute gondola ride to get to Sunshine Village, and once at the top, there's not much else to do but ski! Fortunately the ski hill is open from November to May, so there's lot of time to enjoy it!
