Banff Hot Springs are famous around the world. It was, in fact, hot springs that made the town famous to begin with. The Cave and Basin was discovered first, by railway workers in the 1880's. This is what made the area a destination for travel. Now day, the natural hot springs in the Upper Hot Springs are the main hot springs draw. The Upper Hot Springs are up the hill from Banff town. It was take over an hour to walk, but there's a large parking lot at the top of the hill. Entrance to the pools costs about $7 per person.
Near the hot springs is the Rimrock Hotel. This is definitely the closest hotel to the pool. The views of the Rockies from the Rimrock are, in my opinion, some of the best in Canada. It also has a number of great restaurants and a great spa.
The Banff Springs Hotel is down the hill from the hot springs, but it's on the same side of the river. You'd still need a car to get there, though, or at least a hour to walk. The Springs Hotel, which is actually named after the Cave and Basin Hot Springs, has a lot of amenities to keep the family entertained and well cared for.
