Description:

Named in honor of the original name of the Town of Litchfield, Smithfield Plantation is a charming 103-acre parcel of conservation land ideal for a casual stroll through the woods. The property is owned by the Town of Litchfield and maintained with care and devotion by a core of dedicated volunteers. Two principal trails course through the property which is dominated by an abundant forest of hardwood trees. Wildlife is abundant and it is not unusual to spot deer or even an occasional moose at the plantation. In spring, there is the added bonus of a vernal pool, a type of wet nursery for frogs, insects and fairy shrimp.

Hikers and walkers often acclaim this preserve for its serenity and many chances for quiet reflection. The plantation is easily accessible from downtown Gardiner by traveling west on Route 126, then left onto Hallowell Road and, after traveling 1.5 miles, turning right onto Libby Road for about one mile. Look for a small parking area on the left and a sign for the trailhead. There is no charge for hiking or walking the property.
