Westies. That is the name given to people who live West of Auckland and there has even been a recent TV show based around this area. Stereotypes aside, the areas west of Auckland have a variety of things to do for visitors, many of them in beautiful native bush. You can take the kids out to the zoo, or the social history museum known as MOTAT. Or you can get down and dusty on a walking trail in the Waitakeres. Check out the Arataki Visitors centre first to get a feel for where you'd like to hike and bring your lunch. And, don't forget the beaches. Despite being only about an hour's drive out of the big smoke, the west coast beaches are undeniably wild and beautiful. Practice your engineering skills by building a sandcastle out of black sand, or check out the rock pools. If you are a surfer, this is where you need to bring your board. Piha is a great option if you want to surf but you have family in tow who would just like to go for a paddle as the beach is suitable for both. At Muriwai there is also a gannet colony. Depending on the time of year you will either see adults alone, adults with eggs, or adults flying round looking for food for the fluffiest chicks this side of the Tasman (That's a joke since they migrate once a year over to Australia). But then, there's always the wineries...
