The phrase 'Pan Asian and Pacific Rim' as related to food is pretty much a summary of what New Zealand food is all about. We are closer to Asia than Europe is a fact that is often forgotten until visitors land here and notice the wide variety of cultures we have. This is reflected in the way we eat. We can easily wash down a Kiwi pie with a bottle of green tea from Japan or go out for gelato after visiting the teppanyaki for dinner. But there are a few places which excel in marrying East and West in their cooking. Plenty of the restaurants are located down by the waterfront in the area known as the Viaduct or the Viaduct Basin. You can literally just wander round and pop into any place and the chances are high that you will experience this wonderful mix that New Zealand cuisine is made up of. If you are interested in locally sourced produce served in a local fashion, I'd highly recommend that you try The Foodstore. The chefs opened the place as a concept restaurant and it has has great reviews. Areas other than the CBD you might check are Ponsonby, which you can get the Link bus to, Parnell (also on the Link), and Mt. Eden. Mt. Eden is a funky little area with nice shops and cafes in the daytime and bars and restaurants at night. Plus, if you think you need a spot of pre-dinner exercise, you can walk up Mt. Eden for a view. Catch the sunset, and then head down to the village for some Pacific Rim dining.
