Wanna meet some locals? Auckland's bars are the great meeting place where travellers and locals mix. For an in-depth study of the drinking habits of Kiwis, you need to think of Auckland as having specific 'bunches' of bars. Starting at the top of the hill we have K' Road (Actually it's Karngahape Road, but who can say that after a few beers?). K' Road is the alternative are and you only have to walk down the street and you will see which places are the most popular. There are also some clubs and bars down side streets so if you spot someone who looks like they may have the same taste in venues, ask what's good and they point you in the right direction. Head on down the hill via Queen street and you'll see there are a few bars here and there such as in Aotea Square, but you really need to hop off the main drag. Vulcan Lane has a Belgian bar, an Irish bar and a few others. High Street and Chancery Lane also have lots of choices. Then, heading on down further, look behind the Britomart transportation area and you will find some brewpubs in this trendy new area. Finally, we end up at the Viaduct, also known as the Waterfront where you will find heaps of choices and a great outdoor atmosphere to boot.
