Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium

Address:

Alexandras Avenue
Athens, Greece

Description:

This is the former home of the football club, "Panathenaikos." The name of the stadium derives from the first chariman of the club but is more popularly referred to as "Leoforos." The stadium also hosts basketball and volleyball events in the first indoor court of Greece, known popularly as "The Indian's Tomb" because of an angled, wooden roof.

While the club has been in existence since 1908, the first stand of the stadium was built in 1928 and used until the club finally left for the more modern venue of the Modern Olympic Stadium in Maroussi in 2005. The team will again be given its own, upgraded stadium in the industrial area of Votanikos. Plans for demolishing the old stadium have been slated, if not begun, and the area dedicated to an urban park.

Any bus headed to Alexandras Avenue ("Leoforos Alexandras") or Kiffissias Avenue will get you here, and it's highly recommended to use public transportation over private cars as parking is an epic battle with only the smart cars surviving. The yellow trolleys #7, #8, and #14 also stop just outside the stadium and the Ambelokipi Metro Station (Line 3) is within a short distance. Lycabettus Hill and the animated area of Panormou are both close by.
