We admit it: hotels in Athens can be a challenge. Many people complain about hard beds, indifferent staff, and shady locations regardless of online testimonials that claim otherwise. We believe in lighting the tried and true path when it comes to the best hotels in Athens and stand by our top ten list of friendly, professional, and in some cases, even exceptional hotels. We believe that a well chosen base means that you can manage this small capital entirely on foot; while hotels such as the Hilton, Marriott, and Pentelikon are all very good choices, they require a bit more know-how in maneuvering through the city. Our top ten list focuses on hotels so well located that with a some good shoes and stamina, you don't ever need to hail a taxi.
The Hotel Grande Bretagne is arguably the most significant hotel in all of Greece; not only does it offer five star treatment, beauty and classic good taste, it has a significant foothold in the country's history. The hotel has been used as headquarters for reforming the country's government multiple times in the 20th century. The Classical King George is also a historical hotel, opened in 1936 next door to the GB, but was given some modern, boutique style love when it was purchased by the Grecotel chain. Since then it's been listed as one of the five hundred best hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure Magazine. NJV Athens doesn't meet the grandeur of its two five star neighbors but has a reputation as being consistent in service, friendly, and professional. The trio of hotels stand in a row on Vassileos Georgiou Street in Syntagma Square and get gold stars for being the best located for moving throughout the rest of Athens.
Hotel Hera, the Electra Palace, and the Divani Palace Acropolis are all closer to the city's historical center, Plaka. The Hera is a refined beauty just near the New Acropolis Museum and Aeropagitou, the Electra Palace deep inside of Old Plaka, and the Divani, more on the edge, showcases ancient ruins from inside the hotel. The Royal Olympic and Athens Gate are on busier roads but offer gorgeous views of the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus.
If you're not afraid of heights and wish to get a bit out of the rigamorale of the city, the St. George Lycabettus is the highest hotel of the city, known for keeping the elegant Kolonaki standards. It's positioned just underneath Lycabettus Hill and great for joggers and naturalists, but less ideal for sightseeing with a ten minute walk down to Kolonaki Square and fifteen minutes from Syntagma. The Periscope, smaller and more arty, is a better Kolonaki location for being near the action.
